2) Associate Member - a person that cannot prove their Native American ancestry - or - a person without Native American ancestry that wishes to support the vision and goals of the Metis people. Associate Members are not eligible to receive assistance for programs and services reserved for Native Americans as provided by Metis Nation, Inc.
Why does Metis Nation, Inc. allow Associate Members?
First, by virtue of the definition of Metis (mixed-blood) ancestry, all Metis have relatives that are not of Indian Descent. Many current Metis members have spouses or children of blended marriage that have no Indian ancestry. Many of these relatives and family members have a strong desire to learn about the heritage of their Metis member and embrace the Metis culture and way of life.
Second, there are many philanthropists and philanthropic organizations that are sympathetic to the historical struggle Native Americans have experienced in the past, and are willing to provide meaningful support and resources directed at efforts to remediate the damage caused in the past. By working cooperatively with Metis Nation, Inc., these strategic partners can experience a sense of pride and accomplishment knowing they have made a difference in the lives of Millions of 'unserved' or 'underserved' Native Americans.
